About me

I am an optometrist with a special interest in children’s vision. I qualified as a dispensing optician from City and East London College and went on to study optometry at the University of Wales in Cardiff. I emigrated to New Zealand in 2004 and Wellington has been home ever since.

I work as a general optometrist at Sercombe & Matheson Opticians and a paediatric optometrist at Wellington hospital. I have completed a Masters degree in clinical optometry through the University of Melbourne, Australia and gained theraputic endorsement from the Australian College of Optometry. In 2023 I became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. Joining this historical group has been a great way to connect with fellow members in the U.K. and around the world.

As I came to specialise in childrens vision, I struggled to find an effective tool for assessing reading and decided to design my own reading chart. I have been using the Beardsworth Reading Chart in practice since 2022 and it has been as helpful as I hoped it would be.
